McDowell, Candace S.

Candace S. McDowell, 91, longtime resident of Halstead, died Saturday, October 30, 1999 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. She was born June 8, 1908 in Lakeland, Ohio, the daughter of William C. and Margarete (Scranton) McLean. She married John William McDowell on June 22, 1931 at Denver, Colorado. He died July 18, 1984.
She earned her bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and taught for one year at Cherryvale, Kansas. A Halstead resident for 65 years, she was a member of and the organist for Halstead Presbyterian Church. She was a substitute teacher and piano accompanist at Halstead High School and was a member of PEO AK Capter; Berle Club; AAUW; Halstead Hospital Auxiliary; Eastern Star - Chapter 407; and AM & FM Lodge 46, all of Halstead.
Survivors include three sons; William E. McDowell, Citrus Springs, Florida; Curtis S. McDowell, Allentown, Pennsylvania and Robert W. McDlwell, Halstead; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John W. McDowell, Jr.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 9 at the Halstead Presbyterian Church with inurnment at Halstead Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dallas Curts. Quiring Old Mission Mortuary, Wichita, is in charge of arrangements.
