Harr, Charles

Charles Richard Harr, 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday (Dec. 2, 2011) at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

Charles was born on Dec. 26, 1931, in Wichita to Richard and Margaret (Teter) Harr. He attended Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College, and he graduated from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo. Charles married Della Mae Pletcher on Dec. 22, 1953, in Newton. They made their home in Newton since 1957 and were married for almost 58 years. They had five sons: Richard, Ron, Randy, Brian and Bruce.

Charles retired from Pepsi Cola Company and had been a shoe salesman for Penney’s and Frontier Shoe Store, and worked for Antrim Lumber/National Building Center (now B & B Lumber). He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and was their song leader for many years. He was a handyman and liked helping others, and he also enjoyed fishing and doing woodworking. God and Church were very important to him, having trusted Christ as his Savior at the age of 25. His family also was very important to him. He was a responsible and dedicated man.

He is survived by his wife, Della Mae Harr of the home; five sons, Richard and Char Harr of Hesston, Ron Harr of Noel, Mo., Randy and Billie Harr of Newton, Brian and Julie Harr of Greenville, S.C., and Bruce and Daina Harr of Newton; brother, John Harr of Derby; sister, Mary Travis of Arlington; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Margaret Harr of Hutchinson, and infant grandson, Ryan Harr.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Liberty Baptist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Baptist Church. The committal will be at Greenwood Cemetery following the service. A memorial has been set up for Liberty Baptist Church in care of Petersen Funeral Home of Newton.
