The Rev. Bernard Henry 'B H' Janzen
The Rev. Bernard Henry 'B H' Janzen, 107, minister, died Friday (Jan. 23, 2004) at Kidron Bethel Health Care in North Newton.
He was born Jan. 25, 1896, to Henry W. and Mary (Goertz) Janzen in Newton. They preceded him in death. He married Cathryn Janzen June 3, 1917, in the Stevenson School House in Oklahoma. She preceded him in death Aug. 10, 1974. He married Marie Regier Franz Oct. 1, 1976, in North Newton. She preceded him in death Dec. 12, 1994.
He attended schools at Hillsboro Bible Academy and Torrey Bible Institute in Los Angeles. He taught northeast of Hillsboro and in Lehigh. Besides being a preacher, he worked as a farmer; carpenter; music solicitor; thresher; courier; crop insurance agent; store clerk and as a cream and egg station operator: He served congregations in numerous communities in Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, California, and in Cuauhtemoc, Mexico, and as chaplain at Bethesda Nursing Homde in Goessel. He taught himself the organ, piano and violin and played these instruments for services.
Survivors include: 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by: a son, Elmer H. Janzen; a daughter; Beulah Deckert; a brother; Alfred Janzen; a niece, Irene Hill; and four sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Halstead Cemetery.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel College Mennonite Church with Pastor Heidi Regier Kreider officiating.
Memorials have been established with Kidron Bethel Village in care of the funeral home.
