Stewart, Wade

Harvey County Independent

Wade Stewart, one of the reliable and energetic young farmers of Lakin township died Sunday night, December 15, 1918, at 9 o'clock at the home of his father, J. W. Stewart, about six miles southwest of Halstead. Pneumonia following a case of influenza with which he was taken sick on the 7th was the cause of his death.

Wade was born on the old home farm December 7, 1890 and had therefore but passed his twenty-eighth birthday by nine days when his young life's strings were snapped in the very prime of what promised to be a prosperous career.

He spent all of his life in the immediate neighborhood of his birth place but for several years had been operating the Burrows land on a large scale. He was ambitious to succeed and had made a good start toward securing a competence when the prevailing epidemic claimed him as a victim.

In early manhood, he united with the Centennial M.E. Church and few years later transferred his membership to the Methodist Church in Halstead.

On October 6, 1915 he was married to Miss Laura Wagner of Halstead. They started housekeeping on the Burrows farm about four miles south of Halsted where Wade had lived since March 1912. The happy home was broken up on January 3, 1916, just three months after their marriage when Mrs. Stewart died suddenly.

Previous to the late sickness, he was in excellent health. He took influenza on December 7 and on the 11th, pneumonia developed. He was unconscious most of the time during the last five days, but on Sunday morning, he rallied and recognized those about him.

Besides his adopted son, Harold, he leaves a father, seven brothers and three sisters. Howard; Jay and Ray of Fellsburg, Kansas were unable to come. Mrs Blanche Roebuck and Roy Stewart of this vicinity were unable to be with him at the last because of sickness in their own home. His father, son, Harold; his brothers Ernest, Ross and Glenn and sisters, Carrie and Alma were at his bedside when the end came.

Funeral was held Tuesday morning from the Cheatum Chapel with Rev. Robertson in charge. Remains were laid to rest in the Halstead Cemetery.
