Barbara A. O'Grady, 83, North Newton, former Halstead resident, died August 12, 2000 at Kidron Bethel Village, North Newton. She was born August 12, 1917 at North Canton, Ohio, daughter of Harley O. and Marie H. Schick Swarner.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kansas Nursing Association, Newton Country Club, St. Mary's Altar Society and Kappa Delta Sorority. She graduated from Ohio State University with a B.S. in Nursing and Education, and Wichita State University with a Masters in Education.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed golf, reading and gardening. She was Founder and Director of LPN School in McPherson and Plainview, Texas; an instructor at the Halstead Nursing School. She served in the U.S. Navy as a Lt. JG in the Medical Corps School at Portsmouth, Virginia from 1941 to 1944.
She married Dr. Joseph A. O'Grady on April 10, 1944 in New York, N.Y.. He survives. Other survivors: three sons, David M. O'Grady, Braganca, Brazil; Thomas J. O'Grady, Loxahatchee, Florida; John S. O'Grady, Buena Vista, Virginia; two daughters, Barbara Short Stilwell and Kathleen Turpen, Albuquerque, New Mexico; brother, Benjamin Swarner, Apopka, Florida; and 11 grandchildren and 5 great grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Rosary was at St. Mary's Catholic Church August 16. Funeral services will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Newton August 17. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, August 18, at the Halstead Cemetery.
