Obituary

Melvin K. Schmidt, 82, Moundrige, formerly of Halstead, died February 8, 2001 at Mercy Hospital in Moundridge. He was born April 28, 1918 at Halstead, son of Jacob A. R. and Susie Eck Schmidt.

On April 2, 1939 he married Grace Mae Koehn at Halstead. She preceded him in death on November 6, 1998. He moved to Moundridge in 1998. He was a former truck driver and a mechanic before his retirement. He was a member of Grace Mennonite Church, Halstead.

Survivors: three sons, Lynn Schmidt, Richards, Missouri; Everett Schmidt, ElDorado Springs, Missouri; Lowell Schmidt, Nevada Missouri; five daughters, Hope Smith, Sedgwick; Patricia Eicher, Uniontown, Alabama; Nedra Davis, Inez, Texas; Glenda Davis, Nevada, Missouri and Melgra Leatherman, Transylvania, Louisiana; five sisters, Bernetta Schmidt; Lorene Koehn and Osie Koehn, all of Halstead; and Elma Jean Jost, Greensburg; 24 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; 7 brothers, Daniel Schmidt; Nathaniel Schmidt; Jonathon Schmidt; Adam Schmidt; Abraham Schmidt; Norman Schmidt; and Llewellyn Schmidt; five sisters, Elizabeth Koehn; Lydia Schmidt; Elizabeth Koehn; Lydia Schmidt; Katherine Buller; Adeline Giesbrecht and June Becker; two grandsons and one granddaughter.

Services were held February 12 at the Grace Church of God in Christ Mennonite Church, Halstead. Burial was in the Halstead Cemetery.
