Janzen, Dorothy Mae Ewy

Harvey County Independent

Dorothy Mae Janzen was born January 23, 1915 in Perry, Oklahoma, daughter of John P. and Minnie Brubacher Ewy. She passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Halstead Place Assisted living.

At the age of 5 or 6 years old, the family moved back to Kansas and settled on a farm located near the Harvey County Park. Dorothy and her siblings attended the Riverside School until the family moved to a farm northwest of Farmers Corner. After the move, they attended the Prairie Flower School where she completed the 8th grand and attended Halstead High School.

In 1930 Dorothy became a member of Garden Topwnship Mennonite Church, later gransferring her membership to the First Mennonite Church in Halstead.

On April 12, 1933 she married Waldo W. Janzen in Newton. They lived on farms in the Elbing, Hesston and Newton areas before moving to their farm south of Halstead. In 1949 they moved to Halstead where she resided until September 2000, when her health started to fail.

Survivors: three children; son, Jim of Burrton; two daughters, Dorothy Jean, Boise, Idaho and Virginia, Newton. 8 grandchildren; brother, Ralph Ewy and sister, Betty Buller, both of Halstead. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, waldo, and daughter-in-law, Bobbie Janzen.

Services were at the First Mennonite Church. Burial was in Halstead Cemetery.
