Obituary

Leslie R. "Les" Monroe, 69, died Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. He was born July 28, 1938 in Lyons to Charles William and Virginia Lee Hoyt Monroe. On July 19, 1963, he married Karen R. Downing in Deerfield. She survives.

He served his country in the Air National Guard. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas in 1960 with a degree in accounting. He was an active member of the Trinitry Heights United Methodist Church in Newton where he served on various committees including the administrative council and finance committee.

He was a retired partner in the Knudson Monroe Accounting Firm in Newton. He was a member and former board member of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He gave his time and talent serving on many boards and committees in the area throughout his career. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his friends and especially his wife, golfing at Fox Ridge Golf Course and other courses throughout the country.

He was a member of the Newton Lions Club; Veterans of Foreign War and the Harvey County Hawks. He greatly enjoyed sports, especially following the Newton High School teams and his beloved KU Sports teams.

Survivors: include a daughter, Amy Monroe, San Diego, California; sons, Kevin and Kathie Monroe, ElDorado and Gregory and Dawn Monroe of Wichita; brothers, William Monroe, Sterling and Frank Edward Monroe of Suffolk, Virginia; sisters, Roberta Curtis of St. John and Yvonne LeGear of Concord, California; granddaughter, Lyndsee Stover; grandson, Andrew Monroe and granddaughters, Madison Monroe and Claire Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Max Monroe.

Services will be Saturday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Curch in Newton. Burial will be private.
