Michael Steven Smith, 58, of Wichita, died on Friday (Feb. 10, 2012) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Michael was born on Feb. 15, 1953, to Thomas Harlan and Mary Ann (Wilson) Smith in Newton. He attended the Newton schools and in 1971 joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Michael served three years of active duty and three years of inactive duty. Michael was an MP on a naval ship and traveled to many different countries.
Michael is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Biggerstaff and stepfather Donald Biggerstaff, both of Newton; and siblings, Hal (Deb) Smith of Topeka, Marian Sanders of California, Ann Mills of Laughlin, Nev., Georgann Weeks of Wichita, Sherry (Terry) Mayhill of The Woodlands, Texas, Jerri Stucky (Tony Gooden) of Antonito, Colo., Barbara (Jimmy) Meetz of El Dorado, Ricky (Shirley) Smith of Wichita, Donald (Helen) Smith of Newton, Brenda (Roe) Hicks of Wichita, Jana (Roger) Morrison of Newton, Tammy (Dennis) Wyse of Hesston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Harlan Smith, brother Fred Smith, maternal grandparents Art and Maxine Wilson, paternal grandparents Ruth and Ernest Lindquist, and Fredrick Smith, all of Salina.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at United Church of Christ, 210 E. Fourth in Newton. There will be no visitation as cremation has been effected. Arrangements are by Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army where Michael often was a volunteer. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
