Haury, Gertrude

Gertrude Haury, 95, Newton, died March 24, 2003 at Newton Medical Center. She was born June 30, 1907 at Claflin, daughter of Albert Peter and Anna Penner Haury. In 1924 she moved with her family to Blackwell, Oklahoma, where he graduated from high school in 1925. She received a bachelors degree from Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma in 1928, a masters degree from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in 1935 and a degree in library science from the University of Illinois in 1947. She taught high school English at Claflin and Hutchinson from 1928 to 1945. She served as librarian at Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Junior College and the Hutchinson Public Library, retiring in 1968. After retiring, she moved to the Ozarks, where she lived until she moved to Newton Presbyterian Manor in 1975.
She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church and Chapter D of PEO, both of Hutchinson and several professional associations and honorary societies.
Survivors: several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, W. T. Haury.
Graveside services were held Monday afternoon at Halsted Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Charles Kaufmann, pastor of Golden Plains Free Methodist Church, rural Newton.
