Moffatt, Harry L.

Harvey County Independent

Harry L. Moffatt, 81, former Halsted businessman, died June 20, 2003 at his home in Newton. He was born August 21, 1921 at Altoona, son of Harry A. and Lucy Crossfield Mofftt. He attended schools in Altoona and graduated from the Kansas City School of Watch Makers. He was a master watch maker and jeweler for 49 years and the owner of Moffatt's Jewelry in Halstead and then in Newton.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as Radarman Third Class. He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Thuban out of San Francisco to Shanghai, China, Japan, Guam, Formosa and Pearl Harbor.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner, and was past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge, all of Newton.

On February 19, 1971, he married Unilda Bestvater at Newton. She survives of the home. Other survivors: son, Dr. A. L. Moffatt, Edmond, Oklahoma; three daughters, Nancy Anderson, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Linda Bew, Midland, Texas and Trudee Thornhill, North Richland Hills, Texas; brother, Gordon Moffatt, Ketchum, Oklahoma; two sisters, Lois Irene Hall, Loveland, Colorado and Dorothy Kingsbery, Olathe; 5 brandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Moffatt.

Services were helld June 24 at Broadway Colonial Funeral H ome, Newton. A private family burial was held following the funeral.
