Velma J. Walker, 81, Newton, former owner/operator of Ember's Restaurant in Halstead, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at Via Christi Medican Center in Wichita. She was born July 22, 1921 in Newton, the daughter of George and Nellie Ragland Warhurst.
She worked for Safeway for 21 years and was a self employed business owner. She was a member of Ladies Auxillary of the First Christian Church, Newton. She enjoyed fishiing, board games and her work, Loved her family and her numerous grandchildren.
She married Don Walker. He survives. Other survivors: three daughters, Elizabeth Brackeen and Jan Griffitts, both of Rose Hill and Norma Rosota, Orlando, Florida; brother, Jack Warhurst, Chanute; four sisters, Joan Anderson, Coca Beach, Florida; Bonnie Montgomery, Newton; Rosalie Moss, Huntsville, Alabama and Pearl Usher, Whitaker, Califoria; daughter-in-law, Treva Crawford, Newton; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dwight R. Crawford Jr; two brothers, Bud Warhurst and an infant brother; four sisters, Eliabeth Atkins; Georgie Blair; Viola Hood and Betty Wilson.
Graveside services were held June 2 at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton with Rev. Bill Hickerson presiding.
