Harvey Arnold Smith, son of Howard D. and Emma Smith was born in Genoa, Miller county, Arkansas on April 10, 1918. His father, preceded him in death on October 19, 1918 at Jacksonville, Tennessee.
He died at 8 o'clock Saturday evening, February 21, 1942 at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas at the age of 23 years, 10 months and 11 days.
Death was caused by an accident which occurred at 5:30 Sturday evening when he was engaged in pulling tubing on the Teten lease of the Trans-Western Oil Co. near Burrton. He fell 50 feet from the tubing board to the derrick floor,believed to have been knocked off balance by a rope or part of the rigging. He was taken immediately to Grace Hospital where he died at 8 o'clock.
He was well known in Burrton where he graduated from high school in 1936, after attending grade school at Maple Grove. Following his graduation, he was employed for a year and a half by the E. J. Shaffer Oil Co. in Burrton. He went to Liberal in August 1941 and worked there for the Panhandle Eastern until last month. He had his application in the Air Corps and had returned to Burrton to wait until he was called into duty.
He leaves to moourn his passing, his mother, Mrs. Emma F. Wilson, his step-father, Ren J. Wilson; two half brothers, Jack and Billy, his grandmother, Mrs. E. W. Wilson; 9 aunts and 6 uncles. Also his fiancee, Miss Barbara Lehman and a host of friends.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Burrton. Burial was in the Burrton Cemetery.
