Young Paxton Threatens Life of His Family Procures Revolver Under False Pretenses But Was Prevented From Committing the Deed There came near being a case of murder at the home of E. S. Paxton this afternoon caused by some trouble in the family which occurred this morning and which so enranged the younger son, Arthur, that he threatened to kill the family. In accordance with this threat he went to I. Nicodemus' second hand store and told him that his father had fallen heir to a ranch and that he was to live on it and wanted to buy a gun. He found one that suited him but said that his father was sick and that he would want to take it home for him to see before purchasing it. He suggested that Mr. Nicodemus go with him and that if the gun suited they would keep it and pay him for it. Mr. Nicodemus complied with the request and as they neared the house, Arthur said that as his sister-in-law was afraid of a weapon of any kind that it might be wise for him to carry it under his arm. Mr. Nicodemus gave the gun to him and he put it under his coat. When they reached the house they found the front door locked. Arthur ran around to the back and found it the same way so he dodged into a cellar window. He had some cartridges in his pocket and was loading the gun and his mother becan screaming, Arthur all the time threatening to shoot her. The older brother then procured a gun and placing it at his brother's head forced him to walk out of the house, where Mr. Nicodemus took the weapon away from the boy. The sheriff was told of the trouble and arrested the lad, and took him to the county jail to await further action by the authorities. The Evening Kansan-Republican, Friday August 19, 1904. Page 1.
