Charles "Charlie" Newell, 86, Newton, died Saturday, January 20, 2004 at Bethesda Home, Goessel. He was born May 20, 1917 at Cheney, son of Carl and Helen
White Newell.
He was owner of Newell Truck Plaza, Hotel and Restaurant and worked daily until he was 85 years old. He was a pioneer in customer service and loved to help individuals in need. He was an avid sports fan who attended all of his children's sporting events and was a strong sponsor of the Mexican American Softball Association. He was alwo the former owner of Charlie's restaurant in Halstead.
He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, American Quarter Horse Association and Kansas Oil Marketeers Association.
On July 23, 1991, he married Jill Gardner in Newton, she survives. Also surviving: two sons, Charles Newell and Kerry Newell; two daughters, Donna Lesfwich and Wanda Willems both of Newton; 5 grandsons; 3 granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Roger and Stephen Newell; two sisters, Thelma Cain and Mabel Newell.
Services were held January 14, at the church. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
