$5 Lawsuit Costs $43
The Burrton Monitor, 07 Aug 1885
Quite an exciting trial was held before Squire England last Friday in the case of Jake Young, one of our barbers, and Mr. Pugh one of our citizens. Some weeks ago Mr. Pugh’s son died and Mr. Young was called upon to shave the deceased, which he did, and after a time presented a bill of $5.00 for the job. Mr. Pugh refused to pay it and Mr. Young entered a suit for $10. A jury was empaneled, and after the evidence of L. D. Beaver, of Halstead, John Stah, John Schrits and Mr. Norton, of Newton (all barbers), the jury decided in favor of Mr. Young, allowing him $5. This with the cost made about $43 for Mr. Pugh to pay. Fifty to sixty dollars for a matter that five dollars would have settled.
