Jacobson, Harold L.

Harold L. Jacobson, died peacefully Thursday, April 27, 2006 at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. He was born January 28, 1908 to Cornelius Neal and Clara Nighser Jacobson in Norfolk, Nebraska. The family moved to Sedgwick where he played basketball and attended school.
On November 10, 1947 he married Catherine Sutherland. Following 44 years of marriage, she preceded him in death February 28, 1989.
He retired from the Newton Postal Service in 1963 after 34 years of service. He delivered mail to the Harvey County Red Cross office, where he met Catherine. Affectionately known as Kate and Jake, the couple apeared in the garb of Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross in parades. They also visited nursing homes and schools promoting patriotism. Together they owned and operatd Poor Katie's Antiue Shop as a pleasant pastime for their retirement years.
For 20 years, Jake was a favorite subject of photographer H. E. Shoemaker of Newton. With the full, white beard, twinkling eyes, he had been portrayed as a seaman, hobo and several turn-of-the-20th-Century characters.
He is survived by sons, Jerry and Wife Karen Jacobson of Olathe; James Jacobson of Cresent City, California and Orin and Wift kay Trabert of Tucson, Arizona, numerous grand children.
Services were held May 2 at First Christian Church, Newton. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery, Sedgwick.
