Spangler, Ruth Emma Romine

Ruth Emma Romine Spangler, 100, former Walton resident, October 21, 2007 at Presbyterian Manor in Newton. She was born December 8, 1906 to William David and Lena Belle Keedy Romine in Darlow. She attended rural schools in Cordell, Oklahoma, before moving to Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1925. She went to Bethel college for one year and moved to Wichita, attending Wichita University. She had always wanted to be a teacher and during her sophomore year in college, she took leave and taught for several years at a rural school in Sedgwick County. After this, she went back to Wichita State University, graduatiing in 1932. With her previous experience as a teacher, she was one of the few during the Depression era to actually get a posibion. She was hired to teach English, Latin and Spanish at Walton High School.
After four years at Walton High School, she taught for a year at a private school in Wichita before teaching first grade in the Wichita Public School System. During this time she met Clarence Spangler and they were married in 1948. He died May 1966 near Cassody. She continued to teach after hit death until she retired at the age of 65.
During her retirement, she was busy serving on the Harvey County Home Economics Extension Advisory Council. She was a member of the Walton Methodist Church where she taught senior adult classes and served the church in a variety of areas.
Survivors: Nephew, Brian Romine, Eugene, Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, George Romine and sisters, Mary Romine and Prudence Price.
Services were October 25 at the Church. Burial was in Walton Cemetery.
