Baer, Albert E

Evening Kansan-Republican

Albert C Baer Albert C Baer, prominent farmer of Macon Township, died early Friday evening near his home as the result of a gunshot wound that was believed to have been received accidentally. His body was found about 7:45 o'clock by parties who started a search for him when he failed to return home from a hunting trip. Mr. Baer had been in Newton Friday afternoon and upon his return home he picked up his shotgun and told his wife he was going out to hunt rabbits. He left the house about 5 o'clock and when he failed to return about 6:30 p.m. Mrs. Baer became worried and called Sam Stein, a neighbor, who organized a search party. The body was discovered by Dean Grove, about 40 rods west of the home slumped over a brush pile, in a gulley. The shotgun was sticking up out of the brush and contained one loaded and one empty shell. It was believed Mr. Baer had walked into the brush attempting to scare out some rabbits when the gun discharged. It was not until his body was brought to Newton and the clothing removed, that the wound was discovered in the abdomen. Dr. M. C. Martin, coroner, Sheriff Harry W. Goodman and Undersheriff Bruce Walker were called to the scene west of Newton and it was first believed Mr. Baer died of a heart attack, as he was known to have suffered with heart trouble. Mr. Baer had resided since 1902 on the farm, which is located two miles south and one mile west of the Twin Bridges, and had a prosperous truck farming business. He was born March 8, 1874 in Sommerfield, Ill. and was 64 years old. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Iva McElwain, of Burrton, and four brothers and three sisters. A short service for the family will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the home, followed by rites at the Mennonite church in Halstead at two-thirty. Rev. David C. Wedel, the pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Halstead cemetery under the direction of Duff & Son.
