Pownell, Hannah Pyles
Halstead Independent
Hannah Pyles Pownell was born on February 16, 1927 at Hempshire, Virginia. She was married to A. S. Pownell on March 23, 1849. They moved to Danville, Illinois in 1864. They returned to West Virginia where they lived until 1863. They then went to Ohio. There they remained until 1878 and moved to Kansas. Six children were born to this union, all of whom are still living. They are Thornton, Lizzie, Reuben, Mary, Fredrickk, Linnie; an adopted son Harvey, now lives on the home place northwest of town. A girl, Daisy Neas, who had her home with the Pownells was killed by a storm in 1895. Mr. Pownell passed away in July 1895, Mrs. Pownell died Wednesday, February 17.
Funeral services were held from the house at 10 o'clock and from the Methodist church at 11 o'clock on Friday morning, February 19. Mrs. Pownell was widely known in this county and many friends attended the funeral. The sermon was preached by Rev. G. H. Parkinson . Mrs. Pownell had been a suffereer but she bore her trials well and was always cheerful and patient. She passed away peacefully to her well earned reward.
