Scherb, Carl

Halstead Independent

Carl Scherb died Friday morning at his home after an illness of several months.  The end was expected as he underwent an operation 3 months previous and the attending sugeons discovered he was a victim of abdominal cancers and nothing could be done for his relief.  He was born in Besse, Hessen, Germany and came to Halstead in 1884.  He served 3 years in the German Army previous to coming over.  At the age of 14 he was united with the Lutheran Church.

He was married twice and leaves a widow and 3 children.  The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the German Methodist Church.  The services were conducted by Revs. Schen, Stein and Lante.  Interment was in the City Cemetery.  A fitting feature was the fact that the pall bearers, Carl Kaiser, Martin Banze, Gust Farber and the 3 Holle brothers were old adquaintenances and they all came to  America together. .
