Valeria Martinez, 86, of Newton, died Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Asbury Park in Newton. She was born
May 12, 1926 in Leadville, Colorado, daughter of Higinio and Amela Sanchez Garcia. Valeria married Ramon A. Martinez on March 23, 1946 in Liberal.
She was a member of Guadalupe Catholic Church was past president of the Altar Society and a member of the Daughters of Isabella No. 465. For many years she enjoyed cooking and serving many of the Altar Socieity functions. She worked at the Newton Presbyterian Manor for 22 years where she retired from the food service department as a supervior. She received the President's Volunteer Award in 2004. She was a member of the Wichita District Dietetic Assoc. While serving as committee woman for the Harvey Co. Democrats, she entertained Gov. Robert Docking in her home. She volunteered for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was a Den Mother for Boy Scout Troop No. 143.
Survivors: sons, Roderick Martinez, LaPuente, California; Robert Martinez and companion, Lynn, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Richard Martinez of Rio Rancho, N.M. and Michael Martinez and wife, Lynnette, Newton; daughter, Christina Trujillo and husband, David of Newton; brother, Jim Garcia, Liberal; Fred Garcia, Houston, Texas and Arthur Garcia, Woodbury, N.J.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.]]She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ramon on Sept 27, 1990; daughter Mona Louise Martinez in 1965; brothers, John and Greg Garcia and great grandson, Joe Conteras.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Nov. 9 at Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Newton with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Newton.
