Jantzen, Dan D. Jr.

The Newton Kansan

   Dan D. Janzen, Jr., 86, died Friday, November 2, 2012 at Asbury Park in Newton.  He was born December 31, 1925 in Liberal to Dan D. and Ida Deckert Jantzen Sr.  Dan graduated from Kismet High School in 1944.

   He played trombone and participated in a variety of sports.  He missed a year of high school due to a hip injury from high jump.  He attended Dodge City Community College.  Dan tried to serve his country in the military but was turned down due to his hip injury and surgeries.

   Dan worked several jobs, including farming with his brother in Colorado prior to working for Beachcraft in Wichita from 1952 to 1965.  He then joined the Coleman Company, starting in the printing department and later joining the industrial photography department from 1952 to 1965.  He enjoyed his time at Coleman and had the privledge of photographing the Coleman family and top managers.

   He also worked for Edwards  Typographic Service and farmed with his dad on a small farm south of Newton.  He enjoyed reading, music, writing short stories and collecting ball point pens.  Dan also enjoyed spending time with his friends and loving family.

   He is survived by sisters, Jean Towle of Amarillo, Texas; Vera Shields of Seattle, Washington; and Verna Mae Hedrick of Liberal, Kansas and brothers, Merlin Jantzen of Liberal, Kansas and Harvey Jantzen of Bucklin, Kansas.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ray Jantzen.

    Services were held Monday, November 5 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton with Chaplain Bill Eichelberger of Good Shepherd Hospice residing.  Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery iin Newton.  Memorials to American Cancer Society of American Heart Assoc.
