Goddard, James Hawthorne

James Hawthorne Goddard was born in Sparta , Illinois July 12, 1840 and died at his home in Sedgwick on June 5, 1906 aged 65 years, 10 months, 24 days.
At the age of 21 years he enlisted in the 42nd Illinois volunteers, in 1861 serving four years and nine months as assistant surgeon. He was married in 1867 to his present wife. To this union were born three children.
In 1873 the family came to Kansas, locating on a homestead near Sedgwick. Later they came to town where the doctor practiced medicine for more than a quarter of a century and was always a prominent factor in the social political and religious life of the community.
