Shirley M. Hurley, 83, died December 31, 2012 in Newton. She was born May 16, 1929 in Dodge City at home to Carter E. and Ada McCammon Calder. She married Lucius M. "Mike" Hurley on March 23, 1947. A graduate of Dodge City High School and Wilcoxen Beauty School, she owned and operated Shirley's Beauty Salon iin Newton for 40 years and retired in 1990.
She belonged to the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries and was a 50 year member of OES and Beauceant. With her husband, she was active in the Harvey County Shrine and Midian Pipes and Drums in Wichita.
She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Newton. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and needlework and taught many other the same.
She is survived by her children; Tom Hurley (Anna), Westminister, Colorado; Bob Hurley (Barb) of Wichita; Cheryl Hurley, Wichita and Kim Benson of Admire, 6 grandchildren; niine great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchilden and sister, Marjorie Brock, Grand Junction, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband and siblings, Jerry Calder and Gayl Mino.
Services were held January 5 at the church. Broadway Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
