Quilty, Dorothy

The Newton Kansan


Dorothy Jane Quilty, 90, of Newton, died Saturday (Oct. 3, 2009) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton.


She was born on Sept. 9, 1919, in Newton, the daughter of Joseph M. and Nora F. McGarry Steinkirchner. They preceded her in death.


Jane graduated from Newton High School in 1937 and from Kansas State University in 1941. She married Lawrence Michael Quilty II on Feb. 7, 1948, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. Jane had been a grade school teacher for many years at St. Judes in St. Louis, Mo., and St. Joseph’s in Shawnee. They return to Newton shortly after she retired in 1976. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.


Survivors include her husband, Larry, in Newton; two sons, Joseph M. Quilty and his wife, Janice, of Olathe, and Lawrence Michael Quilty III and his wife, Helen, of Shawnee; one daughter, Karen R. Quilty Miller and her husband, Martin, of Topeka; five grandchildren, Heather Quilty, Heidi Quilty, Jaime Quilty, Krystin Sanford and her husband, Steve, and Lawrence Michael Quilty IV and his wife, Ashlee; and one great-grandson, Kevin James Sanford.


Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
