Obituary

 Charles Elmer Lowery was born in Bellevue, Ohio, June, 1864.  In early life he began to make his way in the world.  In his teens he was apprenticed to the painter's trade.  This he had well learned before he was 21.  With the exception of four years of farm life here in Kansas, he always worked at his trade at which he was quite proficient.  Sixteen years ago he came to Kansas, to Hiawatha.  In January  1896 he married Delphini Davis, then of Hiawatha.  Of this union nine children were born, all of the home are living excepting one daughter who died three years ago.  Her death rested heavily on both Mr. & Mrs. Lowery, as she was one of the favorites of the home with all.  Her enlarged portrait as it hangs in the home tells not only of how she was beloved, but that she was an unusual child.

   About seven years ago, Mr. Lowery and his family became residents of Burrton, where he had been quite favorably and pleasantly known.  He was one of our home-loving and law abiding citizens.  Thirteen years ago he was converted and united with the Methodist Church of Hiawatha, Kansas.  At the time of his death he was a member of the Burrton Presbyterian Church.  His death came as both a surprise and a shock to the community.  Two weeks before his fatal illness, he was an appreciative listener and worshiper in one of our church services.  On the Friday following he was seized with what is commonly known as painters colic, soon attended with typhoid fever.  But the two were too powerful in their league of destruction, and in site of both medical skill and trained nursing, he was taken from his home and loved ones.
