Sauerwein, Wilbur A.

The Newton Kansan

   Wilbur A. Sauerwein, 88, died Tuesday, April 16 at his Newton Presbyterian Manor apartment.  He

was born July 18, 1924 in Hesston to Charles and Nellie Belle (Hawkey) Sauerwein.  He married Bonnie

Dell Beaugh on March 22, 1948.  She preceded him in death on January 23, 2008.  Wilbur was a retired farmer

and dairyman.  He was a member of First United Church of Christ in Newton.  He was also a founding member of the Harvey County Rural Water District #1 and served on the board of directors of the Farmers Co-Op.

   Wilbur was a 32nd degree Mason with the Scottish Rite; a member of theWalton Lions Club; and a member of Newton Masonic cLodge # 142.  He enjoyed fishing and spending time at coffee with his friends at the Whistle

Stop Cafe in Walton.

   He was known for his large collection of well over 500 hats. He ejoyed the times local bus tours would stop by to see

his hat collection and visit.

   Survivors: sons; Donale (Charlotte) Sauerwein of Newton; Charles (Carolyn) Sauerwein of Cimmeron; Mark Sauerwein of Newton; daughters, Janet (Larry) Matschull of Midland, Texas; and Denise (Jim) Sullivan of Leavenworth;

brothers, Ardith Sauerwein of Peabody; sister; Virginia of Newton.  He had 24 grandchildren and 14 great

grandchildren.

   He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Robert Sauerwein; sisters, Gladys Miller; Maarjorie Guthrie; Ruth Guthrie; Marion Winsor; Lucille Dey Putnam; Rose Elaine Stehman; Charlene Hamm and Wilda Yarnell.

   A memorial service will be April 20 at First United Church of Christ in Newton.  Private family burial will

be in the Walton Cemetery iin Walton.  Memorials to Walton Rural Life School.
