Maria Goebel "Grandma" Stauffer was born in Rosenthal, Germany, on January 17, 1826. She came to America in 1826 and settled in New Jersey in 1856 with her only brother. She married John Stauffer in 1858, they had 6 children. They went to Summerfield, Illinois in 1863, came back to Halstead in 1876 to farm north of the city. They belonged to the Mennonite Church.
