Schierling, George Jr.

The Newton Kansan

   George Schierling, Jr., 76, died July 8, 2013 at Asbury Park in Newton.  He was born July 2, 1937 in Halstead to Geoge and Marie Kroeker Schierling, Sr.  He married LaVerna Funk in 1959 in Hillsboro.  She survives of the home.

   George worked at the American Flour Mill while completing classes to become an electrician.  He worked as an electrician for 42 years in the Newton and Wichita area.

   He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golf, football, basketball and baseball.   He cared for and loved his family very much, enjoying many annual vacations at a favorite place in Crested Butte, Colorado.  He and his wife attended First Mennonite Church in Newton.

   Survivors: wife of the home; daughters, Debbie (Scott) Koehn
 and Diane (Gary) Hite; 4 grandchildren; sister-in-law, Virginia Schierling and brother-in-law, George Ensz.

   He was preceded in death by three brothers, Irvin, Edward  and Harry Unruh; one sister, Dorothy Ensz; parents; grandson, Justin Fulkerson and soin-in-law, Mark Fulkerson.

   Funeral services were held July 10 at the Church.  A private family inurnment will be scheduled at a later date.

   Shortly after retiring, George was diagnosed with Parkinson's.  As the disease effects advanced, Geoge's faith remained strong.
