Word has been received here of the death in Enid, Okla., Sunday of Samuel D. Wilcox, former Newton resident who made his home here almost 50 years ago. He was close to 90 years old.
He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Miller, with whom he and Mrs. Wilcox had been living for the past year. The body will be brought here tomorrow, according to information received by Duff and Son mortuary, and services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. at the grave in Greenwood cemetery.
Rev. Thomas Mabley, pastor of the Episcopal church, will be in charge and the local Masons will have a part in the services. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are expected to accompany the body here.
Old timers recalled today that Mr. Wilcox was employed at a dry goods store operated here in the early days by Peter Lund. Later he received an appointment as railway mail clerk, going to Fort Scott and then Enid. He had been retired for a number of years. He served as commander of the Newton Masonic lodge in 1881, leaving Newton sometime in the 80's.
