Samuel J. 'Sam' Froelich

Samuel J. "Sam" Froelich, 66, 407 S. Kansas Ave., retired owner and operator of Froelich Enterprises in Newton, died Saturday (April 25, 1998) at Sedgwick Healthcare Center.

He was born May 30, 1931, in Optima, Okla., to William and Mary (Haley) Froelich. He married Blanche Turner Dillon June 12, 1973, in Newton. She survives of Newton.

He was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, American Legion Wayne G. Austin Post No. 2, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeries No. 2516, all of Newton. He was a United States Marine Corp veteran serving during Korean war.

He attended schools in Optima, Okla., Liberal, Enterprise and an academy in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of Bethel College with degrees in economics and business administration. He worked most of his life as a salesman for Montgomery Ward and Sears and Roebuck Co.. He formerly operated Froelich Insurance Agency in Newton. He was a bail bondsman and owned rental houses. He was interested in ancient history.

Other survivors included: one step-son, Randall J. Dillon of Newton; two brothers, William Froelich of Portland, Tenn., and Daniel Paul Froelich of Woodline, Md.; four sisters, Mildred Brown of Lacresenta, Calif., Ruth Haley of New Castle, Calif., Magadlin "Mag" Brown of Hooker, Okla., and Martha Rittenhouse of Aurora, Colo.; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Luta Jane Erhardt.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Verney Unruh from First United Mennonite Church officiating. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
