Wanda Bartel Swanson
TURLOCK, Calif. -- Wanda Bartel
Swanson, 74, died Tuesday (May 5, 1998).
She was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Newton
to John and Susie (Friesen) Bartel. She married Alfred Swanson July
26, 1964, at the First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. He preceded her
in death in 1995.
She attended Gnadenau country school
near Hillsboro and was a 1941 graduate of Hillsboro High School and a
1949 graduate of Bethel College. She also did graduate work at
Colorado State Teacher College in Greeley, Colo. She taught schools
in Gnadenau country school, Bruderthal rural school and Macksville
Elementary School and also taught in Mulvane, San Bernardino, Calif.,
Fresno, Calif., and Redding, Calif., retiring in 1978 after 33 years
of teaching.
She was in the Women's Ministries,
Golden Fellowship and the Mission Committee, all of the Calvary
Baptist Church in Turlock. She taught in the primary Sunday School
department, served as a deaconess and enjoyed singing in the choir.
She also was active in Angels on Wheels and was involved in
Scandifest activities. She enjoyed traveling to Europe, Alaska and
Sweden.
Survivors include: three sisters, Elda
Bartel of Goessel, Rosa Thimm of Beatrice, Neb., and Helen Bargen of
North Newton; one brother, Johnnie Bartel of Hillsboro; and nieces
and nephews.
Graveside services were today at
Memorial Park and memorial services were at Calvary Baptist Church,
both in Turlock, Calif.
