Maryetta English
Maryetta English, 93, 1200 E. Seventh,
retired elementary education school teacher, died Saturday (July 4,
1998) at Presbyterian Manor.
She was born June 24, 1905, in Fowler,
Ind., to Edward A. English and Etta S. (Mohr) English.
She attended Stone School and Kerlin
School District 36, northwest of Newton. She was a 1924 graduate of
Newton High School. She taught five years in the Harvey County Rural
School District at Sand Creek, Prouty and Kerlin schools and taught
third grade for 35 years at Hickory Grove School in Johnson County.
During World War II she served on the ration board and helped with
sugar, food and gas rationing in addition to teaching.
She attended classes at Bethel College,
Southwestern College in Winfield, the University of Colorado in
Boulder, Colo., Wichita University and Emporia Teacher's College
where she received her bachelor of arts degree in 1943. She completed
several correspondence courses and received her master's degree at
Kansas City University in 1956.
She lived in Mission for 45 years. She
moved to Newton Presbyterian Manor in 1988.
She was a member of Old Mission
Methodist Church in Mission where she was active in the Yankee Sunday
School Class as well as in the Wesleyan Service Guild where she
served as an officer for many years. She was a member of Trinity
Heights United Methodist Church after moving to Newton. She received
a life membership from the Parent-Teacher Association, was a charter
member and was active in the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa
Gamma. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Johnson
County Teacher's Association.
She enjoyed gardening, traveling, doing
handiwork and crafts. She was interested in genealogy and was the
family historian.
Survivors include three nephews, Darrel
English of Flagstaff, Ariz., Norval English and Vere English, both of
Newton. She was preceded in death by two brothers, David English and
Harold English; and one sister, Ruth English.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.
Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Don Swender from
Trinity Heights United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be
in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at
Petersen Funeral Home.
Memorials have been established with
Trinity Heights United Methodist Church Foundation in care of the
funeral home.
