Constance L. Grimsley
Constance L. "Connie"
Grimsley, 90, retired public school teacher, died Thursday (July 16,
1998) at Newton Presbyterian Manor.
She was born April 8, 1908, in Parsons
to Arthur and Josephine (Stauffer) Lewis. She married Lee P. Grimsley
on June 2, 1962, in Newton. He survives of Newton.
She taught public school for 10 1/2 in
Parsons and moved to Newton and taught for a total of 44 years, the
last 10 years teaching educable mentally retarded children. She was a
member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Newton, American
Association of University Women, Mental Health Group, Harvey Country
Day Care Center, Treble Clef Club, Themian Club, Camera Club,
National Educators Association, Kansas National Educators Association
and National Teachers Association, and was a life member of the
Parent Teacher Association. She served as: member and past president
of the Soroptimists Club, Community Council Treasurer, Newton Council
for Retarded Children, a board member of the Newton Harvey County
Mother to Mother ministry, Olsen Instrumental Music Scholarship Fund
board, four years on the education committee of the Newton Chamber of
Commerce, an RSVP volunteer and 65 years as a Girl Scout member. She
was named Woman of the Year in Education in 1963 and in Community and
Civic Services in 1972.
Other survivors include: two
step-daughters, Jolene Brown of Irvine, Calif. and Carole Hulen of
Huntington Beach, Calif.; eight stepgrandchildren; several
step-greatgrandchildren; and one step-great-greatgrandchild.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m.
Monday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Joyce Holmes
officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Friends
may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Broadway Colonial Funeral
Home.
Memorials have been established in lieu
of flowers at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and Girl Scouts of
America in care of the funeral home.
