Dr. John C. Slifer Jr.
Florence -- Dr. John C. Slifer Jr., 97,
of Florence died Friday (July 17, 1997) at Newton Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 17, 1900, in
Hagerstown, Md., to John C. Sr. and Cora Virginia (Fahrney) Slifer.
On June 22, 1960, he married Eleanor Philo in Nickerson. She survives
of Florence.
He is a retired doctor of osteopathy in
Florence, having worked from 1935 to 1982. He had lived in Florence
since 1935.
He was a member of Florence United
Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Advance Lodge 114, Chamber of
Commerce, Historical Society, Central Kansas and Kansas Osteopathic
Association of Family Physicians and the Marion County Lake Board and
was a former mayor and school board member, all in Florence.
Other survivors include: two sons, John
C. Slifer III of Walton and Lindley Slifer of Marion; a step-son,
Ramon Zook of Florence; one daughter, Lois Brady of Aurora, Colo.;
seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one
great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first
wife, Grace Hughes; one sister; seven brothers; one grandchild; and
one step-daughter.
The funeral service will be at 10:30
a.m. Tuesday at the Florence United Methodist Church in Florence with
the Rev. Raymond Curry officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest
Cemetery in Florence.
Memorials have been established with
Florence Ambulance, Florence Health Care and Union Rescue Mission in
Wichita.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.
