Martha E. Reed
PARSONS -- Martha E. Reed, 90, retired
Katy nurse, died Wednesday (Aug. 12, 1998) at Elmhaven West nursing
home in Parsons.
She was born Dec. 16, 1907, in Newton
to Henry H. Toevs and Margaretha (Regier) Toevs. She married Lloyd B.
Reed on Oct. 23, 1932, at First Presbyterian Church in Parsons. He
preceded her in death Oct. 9, 1989.
She and her family moved to Parsons in
1920. She attended Garfield Elementary School and graduated from
Parsons High School in 1926. She entered nurses training at the
University of Kansas Nurses Training School at Bell Memorial Hospital
in Kansas City where she graduated. She worked at Menorah Hospital in
Kansas City, Mo., for one year and a nurse at the Katy Memorial
Hospital in Parsons from 1955 until retiring in 1972.
She was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women's organizations, Senior
Sunday School class, American Association of Retired Persons, Kansas
University Nurses Alumni, Kansas University Gold Medal Club, Charter
member of Home Guide Extension Club and the former Springhill Circle.
In her earlier years she was active in
Thrifty Thrivers 4-H Club where she had served as a leader for
several years. She had been a charter member of the Sigma Theta Tau
Honorary Nurses Society while in nurses training.
She and her husband lived on a farm
southeast of Parsons after their marriage.
Survivors include: one son, Ronald Reed
of Wichita; one daughter, Marilyn Murray of Santa Paula, Calif.;
seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and
nephews. She also was preceded in death by four brothers and five
sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m.
Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Parsons with the Rev. Donald
K. Parnell officiating. Burial will be in the Springhill Cemetery.
Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in
Parsons.
