Arthur G. Claassen

WHITEWATER -- Arthur G. Claassen, 87, former Potwin resident, farmer and stockman, died Tuesday (Aug. 18, 1998) in Newton.

He was born Sept. 1, 1910, in Newton to Abraham and Elna (Blaser) Claassen. He married Ann Harder on June 8, 1945, in Whitewater. She preceded him in death Jan. 4, 1996.

He was a member of Faith Mennonite Church in Newton. He attended Plum Grove Grade School in rural Potwin and was a graduate of Whitewater High School. He attended one year at Bible Institute in Los Angeles. He was former member of the Emmaus Mennonite Church where he taught Sunday School. He also was a member of the church board and a past chairman.

He served on the Remington USD 206 school board and was a past president. He and his wife traveled extensively around the world and enjoyed cultures of the different countries they traveled in.

Survivors include: three sons, Arthur N. Claassen of Potwin, Dwight Claassen of Whitewater and Dale Claassen of Manhattan; one daughter, Barbara Claassen of Albany, Ore.; and eight grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Mennonite Church in Newton with Pastor Vicki Penner officiating. Burial will be in the Emmaus Mennonite Church Cemetery in Whitewater.

Friends may call until 8:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Bob Lamb Funeral Home in Whitewater. Family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established with Central Homecare and Hospice and Kansas Christian Home, both of Newton in care of the funeral home.
