Benjamin Wedel
Benjamin Wedel, 91, of Hesston died
Thursday (Sept. 24, 1998) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
He was born Nov. 8, 1906, in rural
Goessel to Benjamin B. and Elizabeth (Unrau) Wedel. On May 9, 1931,
he married Helen Dyck in Goessel. She died Dec. 11, 1995.
He was a car man for Santa Fe Railroad
for 30 years, retiring in 1972.
He was a member of the First Mennonite
Church in Newton having joined in 1938 and a charter member of Kansas
500 of the First Mennonite Church in Newton. He is a former Newton
resident.
He loved to garden and share with those
who could use it.
Survivors include a son, Benjamin Wedel
of Newton; three daughters, Ethel Griffin and Elda Buller, both of
Omaha, Neb., and Ruth Mason of Oxford, Pa.; two sisters, Arpa and
Tina Wedel of Hutchinson; four sisters-in-law, Lillian Dyck of
Federal Way, Okla., Ruth Dirks of Sacramento, Calif., Edna Koehn of
Hesston and Katie Schmidt of Newton; 11 grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nine sisters.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.
Monday at First Mennonite Church in Newton with the Revs. Clarence
Rempel and Ruth Bonham officiating.
Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of
Memory in Newton. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday with
family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial
Funeral Home in Newton.
Memorial contributions in lieu of
flowers may be made to the Kansas 500 Mennonite Men's Chorus.
