Martina Lemons

Martina Lemons, 79, formerly of North Newton, died Thursday (Oct. 1, 1998) at St. John's Hospice in Lakewood, Colo.

She was born July 9, 1919, in Selz, N.D., to Henry and Carolina (Louinger) Mattern. She married Merlin D. Lemons Oct. 29, 1940 in Cando, N.D. He preceded her in death Nov. 16, 1992.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton. She was employed at the Santa Fe Laundry and Hehr International, both of Newton. In addition to her employment, she was a lifetime homemaker. She moved from North Newton to Lakewood, Colo.

Survivors include: three sons, John Lemons of Newton, Jim Hibbs of Hutchinson and Merlin Lemons Jr. of Park City; two daughters, Christina V. Vogts of Lakewood and Stella M. Carpentier of Minneapolis; one brother, John Mattern of Thornton, Colo.; 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in rural Newton with the Rev. Antonio Rivera of the Newton Christian Church of Newton officiating.

Family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with Hospice of St. John and Center for Basic Cancer Research, in care of the funeral home.
