Samuel J. (Jack) Smith III

Samuel J. (Jack) Smith III, 53, No. 19 Anderson Court, design draftsman for Boeing Aircraft for the last 18 years, died Wednesday (Oct. 28, 1998) at his residence.

He was born Oct. 14, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo., to Samuel J. and Catherine E. (Slipsager) Smith, who preceded him in death. He married Cheryl L. Unruh Aug. 18, 1978, in Newton. She survives of Newton.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton. He was a graduate of Southwest High School and was a member of the Indian's swim team. He was an avid baseball player in the Southeast League, an Eagle Scout and a runner in the Tribe of Mic-o-Say. He was a 1968 graduate of Baker University. He worked in advertising as a journalist with his father who was formerly a newsman with the Kansas City Journal and Kansas City Star and in automotive manufacturing. He also was formerly employed by the Newton Kansan as a circulation manager.

Other survivors include: one son, Samuel J. Smith IV of Wichita; two daughters, Megan Smith of Lawrence and Sarah Smith of Newton; one brother, John F. Smith of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; and one sister, Carol White of Carbondale, Ill.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Keating officiating. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with Central Homecare and Hospice Inc. and American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
