Ralph William 'Bill' Welty

YATES CENTER -- Ralph William "Bill" Welty, 57, died Thursday (Dec. 3, 1998) as a result of a heart attack while fishing at the Old Yates Center Reservoir.

He was born Jan. 15, 1941, in Newton to Ralph G. and Ruth (Perkins) Welty. He married Stonna (Zyskowski) Smith in 1983. She survives.

He moved to California with his family at the age of 6. He worked as a truck driver until his health forced his retirement. In 1978 he moved to Newton. He and his wife later moved to the state of Washington, then moved to Yates Center about six years ago.

Other survivors include: two sons, Bryan Welty and Timothy Welty, both of Newburgh, Ind.; one step-son, Shane Smith of Moran; one step-daughter, Shelley Davis of Yates Center; one half sister, Pat Carlton of Borrego Springs, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola. Cremation will follow the services with burial at a later date in St. John's Cemetery located at Gas.

Memorials have been established with the Heart Fund in care of the funeral home.
