Walter H. Wentworth

Walter H. Wentworth, 80, of Newton, formerly of Peabody, retired school custodian, died Monday (Dec. 7, 1998) at Kansas Christian Home in Newton.

He was born May 22, 1918, in Augusta to Verne Leo and Jennie (McVicker) Wentworth. He married Beatrice Allen June 19, 1940, in Council Grove. She survives of Newton.

He worked for Wentworth Drilling until 1942 and for Boeing until 1952. He started working as custodian for the Peabody Public Schools and continued in that position until retirement in 1981. He enjoyed rock and coin collecting and woodworking. He and his wife moved to Newton in 1990.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Shirley Herbison of Newton; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Verne Wentworth; and one sister, Eva Ethel Wentworth.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody with the Rev. Charles Kaufmann officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established with American Lung Association in care of the funeral home.
