Maria Avina Martinez

Maria Avina Martinez, 92, 417 W. Fourth, homemaker, died Friday (Jan. 22, 1999) at Newton Medical Center. She was born Nov. 6, 1906, in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico, to Jose and Dorotea (Neri) Avina. She married Ignacio J. Martinez at Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico, in 1922. He preceded her in death May 14, 1973. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Francisco I. Madero Society and a former member of the Altar Society of the church, all of Newton.

Survivors include: six sons, Manuel Martinez of Wichita, Juan Fernando Martinez of San Bernadino, Calif., Armando Martinez of El Paso, Texas, Ricardo Martinez of Kansas City, Mo., Alberto Martinez of Newton and Benito Martinez of Carson, Calif.; four daughters, Rosemary Oquendo and Amelia "Molly" Martinez, both of San Bernadino, Calif., Dolores Rioz of Newton and Carolina Martinez of Hutchinson; 51 grandchildren; and 78 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by three sons, Juan Martinez, Miguel Martinez and Ignacio Martinez de Neri; and three daughters, Maria de LosAngeles, Antonia Islas and Berta Martinez. Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Father John Hotze officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Memorials have been established with Heartland Pregnancy Care Center in care of the funeral home.
