Larry J. Matthews, 76, passed away at his home Saturday, November 30, 20113. He was born April 19, 1937 in Newton to Cora Runnels Matthews and Horace N. Matthews. On December 24, 1956 he married Evelyn Seyler. She survives of the home.
Other survivors: children; Maureen; Deena (Jeff) Sawyer; Kelly Matthews (Jennifer) and Ian Scott; sisters, Glenna Stuckey (Jim); and Marilyn Matthews; brothers, Merwyn Matthews and Loren Matthews (Corleen; 6 grandchildren and
1 great grandchild.
He attended Newton High school, graduating in 1955. Larry retired from Southwesteren Bell after 31 years of servicie and Builders Concrete for 16 years. He was president of the Communication Workers of America Local 6402. He was active in the Newton Community, serving 12 years on the City Comission and served as mayor 3 times;First United Methodist Church was his 'second home' where he was active as president of the United Methodoist Men.
He coached and officiated with youth and young adult baseeball and wrestling. Had his health permited, he would have been ringing Salvation Army bells by now, as he had done for several years.
Services will be at the First United Methodist Church iin Newton. Internment of ashes will be family only at a later date.
