Hofen, Gene Groseclose

The Newton Kansan

   Gene Broseclose Hofen, 98, died Sunday February 9, 2014 at Bradford Village Retirement Community in

Edmond, Oklahoma.  She recently moved to Oklahoma to be near her daughter.  Gene was born February 6, 1916 in Zenith, Kansas, daughter of Laurin and Bessie Jones Groseclose.   She graduated from Sylvia High School in 1937.  She married Laurel Hofen and he preceded her in death.

   Gene was a long time resident of Newton. She was co-owner of Shadelite Marque Company wih her husband, where she worked as office manager for nearly 25 years.  She was a charter member of the Trinity Heights United Methohdist Church.  She served as treasurer/literature secretary for United Methodist Women.  Every Sunday for years, she sold grocery coupons to help raise money for special church proojects.  She was a member of the Newton Lioness, Junior and Senior High PTA president; North Newton City Council member for two terms and was chosen as woman of the year in 1971 for "Religion and Church." 

   Survivors: daughter, Laurina Teke and husband, Paul of Edmond, Oklahoma; son, James Laurel and wife Cindy of Mountain View, California; four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by hher parents, husband; two brothers, Donald and Harold Groseclose and four sisters, Ruby Groseclose, Daisy Moreland, Jooyce McMurry and Pat McKay.

  Services were held at the church on February 15, 2014.  Burial will be in Restlawn Gardens of Memory, Newton, Kansas
