James W. 'Jim' Scheffler
James W. "Jim" Scheffler, 79,
708 Santa Fe, retired manager of North and South Dillons Grocery
Stores, where he worked for 45 years, before retiring in 1980, died
Sunday (May 2, 1999) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St.
Francis Campus.
He was born May 8, 1919, in rural
Newton to William A. and Martha (Sadowski) Scheffler. He married
Evelyn J. Gatz Sept. 17, 1944, at Fort Crook in Omaha, Neb. She
survives of Newton.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW, Elks Lodge and was
a life member of the Newton Chamber of Commerce.
He was past president of the Newton
Recreation Center for eight years, served on the Newton Public
Library board for eight years and past president of Newton Jaycees,
where he received the Distinguished Service Award in 1950. He also
served on the Newton Public Library VITA Program. He was a lifetime
Newton resident. He was a 1937 graduate of Newton High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World
War II.
Other survivors include: two sons,
Robert L. Scheffler of Newton and Ronald J. Scheffler of Topeka; four
brothers, Arthur Scheffler and Morris Scheffler, both of Newton,
Harris Scheffler of Wichita and Bill Scheffler of Colwich; three
sisters, Elaine Barham, Doris Beyrle and Maxine Friend, all of
Wichita; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents and one sister, Trudy Dillman.
Rosary service will be at 8 p.m.
Wednesday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be
at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton with
Father Ken Schuckman officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood
Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m.
Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established with
St. Mary's Catholic Church and Newton Public Library in care of the
funeral home.
