Maj. William J. Baeumel

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Maj. William J. Baeumel, 76, retired from the Air Force and Pitney Bowes in Virginia Beach, Va., died Monday (May 10, 1999).

He was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Newton. He married Mary L. Baeumel. She survivors.

He also was employed at CDI Career Planning and Placement Office.

He attended Little Creek Amphib Base Chapel in Virginia Beach. He was a member of Black Powder Club and AARP.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the infantry and the Army Air Corps. He also served in the Air Force as a tanker pilot during the Berlin Airlift, Korea and Vietnam wars. He retired as major after 24 years.

He received the following medals and awards: Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, American Defense Service, American Campaign Service, Air Force Commendation, National Defense Service, World War II Victory, Army and Airforce Good Conduct and Airforce Longivity Service.


Other survivors include: one son, Joseph W. Baeumel of Virginia Beach; one brother, Glen Baeumel of Cauer D'Alene, Idaho; and four nephews and nieces.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hollomon Brown Funeral Home Bayside Chapel in Virginia Beach with Senior Chaplain Michael Burt of Naval Air Base officiating. Burial will be today in the Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Volunteers, 4663 Haygood Rd., Suite 211, Virginia Beach, VA 23455.
