Joe N. Solis
Joe N. Solis, 85, of Newton, died
Thursday (Oct. 28, 1999) at Kansas Christian Home.
He was born Aug. 5, 1914, in Mexico
City, Mexico, to Jose and Conception (Reyes) Solis. He married
Marcelina Ruiz July 18, 1936, in Emporia. She survives of Newton.
He was born on the battle field during
the Mexican Revolution in Mexico City. His family came to America as
a result of the revolution.
He was a former section foreman at
Santa Fe Railroad for 24 years, where he also was a translator for
Santa Fe, since he was bilingual in English and Spanish. He was an
employee at American Coach Co. as a shipping and receiving clerk for
26 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of Our Lady of
Guadalupe Catholic and a former member of Newton Chapter of the G.I.
Forum, Holy Name Athletic Club and Knights of Columbus, all of
Newton.
He enjoyed football and basketball
games and followed the Newton High football team through the years.
Other survivors include: two sons, Gil
Solis of Tulsa, Okla., and Joe Solis Jr. of Kansas City, Mo.; one
daughter, Virginia Solis of Wichita; one sister, Juanita Leal of
Wichita; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one
daughter, Hope Solis; and two brothers, John Solis and Carmel Solis.
Recitation of Rosary will be 7 p.m.
Sunday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be
10 a.m. Monday also at the church with Father Floyd McKinney
officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
