Epifanio G. 'Elmer' Vega

Epifanio G. "Elmer" Vega, 81, of Newton, retired salesman, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2000) at Columbia Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born Feb. 23, 1918, in Wichita to Jesus and Guadalupe (Hernandez) Vega. He married Carmen Torres June 29, 1940, in Peabody. She survives of Newton.

He was an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was fourth degree Knights of Columbus and also a member of VFW, American Legion and Elks, all of Newton.

He enjoyed sports and was a participant in his early years. He was an avid spectator of various sports for his children and grandchildren.

He worked in the mobile home industry, Royston's Auto Parts and Santa Fe Railroad in Newton.

Other survivors include: two sons, Paul Vega of Newton and Edward Vega of St. Louis; two daughters, Anita Vega-Janowiak of Prairie Village and Cristie Rodriguez of Newton; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; half brother, Raymond Samienago; two half sisters, Margaret Sauceda and Elena Arellano; and step father, Juan Martinez.

Recitation of Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, led by Father Floyd McKinney.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday also at the church with the Revs. Floyd McKinney, Francis Cox and Jerome Beat officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call until 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
